History

Bethany was the first village established in the Barossa Valley in 1842 by 28 Prussian families. The German 'Hufendorf' style of village layout consisted of a village of farmlets with houses fronting the main road with their farm land stretching back behind the houses in long narrow strips. Early settlers grew cereal crops, vegetables and fruit and later on grape growing and wine making became more prevalent. Early settlers names and the church still remain today for the enjoyment of visitors to this wonderful region of Australia.
