Williamstown History
Williamstown is Melbourne's oldest suburb. It was a maritime village and as such it retains many quaint seafront pubs, fishermen's cottages and other relics.

Williamstown is rich in history.  The city's dream was to be the major city of Port Phillip.

In 1835 John Batman landed at Gellibrand's point.  On April 10, 1837 William's Town was named and recognized by Royal Proclamation.  On the same day Melbourne was proclaimed.

Victoria became an independent colony in 1851 but William's Town was not to be the capitol of the new colony.  William's Town became Williamstown.

Williamstown's early trade related to its status as a port - fishing, and for the bluestone  which was quarried there.
